And just 16 years ago that ours truly Jason MacInnis was born. Ever since birth it was quite clear that Jason was going to be a successful Cup and Ballist, he shook heads during his first performance in the phone room at the centre. Pulling off a quad thingy, landing the ball on all the varous platforms of the cup and ball platforms.

Hopefully Isaac will pull through and create a proper birthday tribute to our current leader in the best of Canada Games sales clerks.

Springvale is famous for many things. It’s massive population of 68, Flash’s convenience store and… it is also the birthplace of Craig Edward LeClair. Craig’s talent was realized almost immediately. By the age of three he was already carrying programs and handing them out to the locals. By the age of five he was selling tickets to ball hockey games in nearby Milton. By the age of thirteen he was attracting scouts from many different theatres. When he turned seventeen he turned down an offer by the Neptune Theatre to work in their box office for the summer. He instead decided to hone his personal skills, and accepted a volunteer position at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. The next year was draft year. Craig was taken as the first overall pick by the Confederation Centre. Craig quickly made his way into the starting line up. By the end of the first week he was selling tickets while wearing a blindfold and having both hands tied behind his back. Craig’s hard work eventually paid off and in the summer of 2008 he was unveiled as the Confederation Centre’s new Heritage Guide Co-ordinator. “I knew this kid was going places whenever I first interviewed him,” was Darcy Campbell’s reaction. Craig put up solid numbers as a first year guide, and is looking to add to those in his second season as Head Guide. Anyways I wrote this just to be a total Jackass. The real story here is…

4:25 - I begun my day at the mall with a cab affair that took over one hour from calling the cab, to finally arriving at my destination. It was quite the hassle. I was NOT pleased. But thankfully, Tara was here to save the day and show me all the ropes of working hard at the mall. I’m pretty much pro.

4:30 - Guys, guys! I JUST SAW THE CLARINET GUY! Remember, the one who was my secret archnemesis from the summer? He’s a lot less impressive without his instrument, and his instrumental takes of crappy pop songs. God that guy annoyed me. I should buy a violin and play really badly beside him.

4:35 - Someone just asked me where womens clothing stores are. Do I look like I shop in womens clothes stores? The kind gentleman looked at me, looked at the sign that says “Confederation Centre” and then apologized and left. I feel this is going to be a very long, long night. The very same gentleman just walked by again with a confused look on his face.

4:45 - He just did it again. I’m laughing on the inside. Just so everyone knows, there is a junior high school band playing Christmas carols. I hate Christmas carols.

4:48 - I think the highschool band is finished, WOOO HOOO!

4:50 - I was wrong.

5:55 - I am bored to death. Colin dropped by, but other than that...I didn't even have a pen! A lady generously gave me her's. Thank god for the giving spirit.

Confessions of a Mall Kiosk Worker

Day 1
Although I have had a fairly incident free day here at the mall kiosk, it was not to be entirely without experiences. Some new friends were made, even if some of these relationships are mearly professional ones.

For example, the bond I have recently formed with Crazy Coat-Hanger Lady (or more appropriately Crazy Carpet Hooker Lady as of late... I don't see any coat-hangers). She has been occupying the garbage can situated directly behind me for my entire shift working on her multicolored tapestry. A paser-by commented on how beautiful her work was in which the CCHL replied thank-you and then swore at them very loudly when they refused to buy it. She has been keeping to herself for the most part though. She asked me very politely to watch her stuff as she went to the washroom and to buy some lunch and thanked me quite courteously upon her return. We've come to an agreement that way. I watch her stuff when she needs to go do something, and she doesn't yell at me angrily. It works out well. She seems to have taken an interest in the security guard Danni. Every time she sees him, no matter where he is in the mall, she yells at him to come down so she can show him how to hook a rug, then laughs hysterically. Altogether a rather enjoyable afternoon with Crazy Carpet Hooker Lady.

My second new friend of the day I shall name Creepy Singer guy. I have dubbed him such after the manner in which he started up a conversation with me. He simply paced around my booth for a little while, and after I ignored him and continued to read my book he started to sing to me. I'm not really sure what song it was, but he did sing it with much enthusiam. We then discussed my enjoyment of reading and what a wonderful passtime is it. He left shortly after a very long awkward pause. Not quite the bosom friends that CCHL and I are, clearly.

That is all for today. And to think, I was only asked once where the Family Shoe Store has gone! Either people are getting smarter, or 1 year really is enough time for the truth to sink in.

That's what you do, get their attention. Great now that I have your attention, I would like to cordially invite all of you to 334 Euston street for a pleasant evening of socialising. Terry is being very generous and will be hosting a Christmas party at his house. The event is going to be exceptionally popular as this is most likely Terry's last party of 2008, so please make sure to get your tickets well in advance. This party will be starting on the 21st of December, at 8:30 with doors opening for 8. This production is general admission. If needed, booster seats and hearing devices will be supplied. Please Byob, any additional munchies are appreciated, although some will already be supplied by Terry. Terry pleads for someone to please please please bring Walking Nachos. Plenty of floor room will be provided if people wish to spend the night, one might want to bring a sleeping bag if they plan on staying. Please no drinking and driving. We all know Christmas is awesome. First of all you get to spend time with people you love. Secondly, you can get drunk and no one can say anything. Third, you give presents. What's better than giving presents? And fourth, getting presents. So four things. Not bad for one day. It's really the greatest day of all time. Ever.

WHOA. WHOA. Wait a second, NEW ROYALTY? AT THE WAVE!?!?!

Yes folks, you heard it right, everyone's favourite co-worker, Isaac Berzins, and his band, New Royalty will be performing LIVE at The Wave Sept 12th at 10:00pm. This is a wet/dry event, so come get preferred drink, and dance your hearts out with us. This is one of my last shows with the band, and I promise it will be one of the best. For those who haven't heard us/seen us before, you can check us out at http://www.myspace.com/newroyaltypei for one of our songs, and some basic info!

Other bands playing that night include: String Theory, and Halifax Heavy-Weights, The Gypsies. Cover is TBA, and this is following a comedy routine from that Sabrina girl from Video on Trial.

The North River causeway will be closed all weekend so don't try to take it!

Instead, take highway 2 if you're coming from town (I'm going to assume you can all find highway 2). Once on highway 2 go straight at set of lights (Rustico Rd intersection, just after the gray and red church). Very shortly after the set of lights turn left onto highway 248, I think it's called the North York River Road. There'll be a sign right before the turn saying Cornwall and Warren Grove with a left arrow. After a few minutes there'll be stop sign - keep going straight. Eventually you'll come to the intersection with a set of lights by the old North River Rink. Keep going straight. Take the 5th left after the lights (which is at the last visible lamp post) onto Marianne Drive. Dr. If you don't see any lamp posts you've gone too far. My house is #40 - it's dark green one with the reddish roof and the yellow door - it's on the right hand side about 2/3rds of the way down the street.

Short version: Get onto highway 2. After a bit, turn left onto highway 248/North York River Road. Eventually you'll get to the set of lights at North River - go straight at the lights and then take the 5th left on Marianne Drive. Go to house #40.

Maud Whitmore Scholarship Benefit Concert

We have new kiosk hours - we're now here 12pm-9pm instead of 10am-2pm. I do not see the seniors anymore. Their visits were always in the morning. I miss my mall friends.

My mall friend from entry #1 (the one who wants to find a job or play poker online if that doesn't work, I'll call him Pete) stopped by for his visit today. He just wanted to know if I'd sent a letter to Santa Claus yet. And then he left. By left I mean went to talk to the people in the CD store. Oh - and now he's coming back here as I type. Don't make eye contact. Don't make eye contact. And he's gone. Or at least I can't see him.

Mall Diaries - Entry #2

I made a new friend today. I don't know his name, although I know his wife's name is Ruth. I will call him Bill. Bill was sitting at a chair behind our kiosk when I arrived this morning. He asked if he could help sell tickets. Not wanting to kick an old man out of the only chair in sight, I told him he could stay. We chatted as I hooked everything up for the kiosk. Bill is from Summerside and drove down today to do some Christmas shopping. He said the roads were great - just like summer; although once he got into town he found the sidewalks rather icy. He asked what he could do to help. I told him just to sit there and look pretty to draw in the customers. He smiled. I don't know if it's because he was amused or was attempting to follow my instructions. Bill stayed and chatted for 15 minutes. It turns out he has family in BC so we discussed airfare and inconveniant westjet flight schedules. He said if I hadn't turned up he would have invited the guy at the salvation army stand over here to sit with him. Then Ruth found him and took him away.

I wonder if Bill was lost and waiting for Ruth to find him or if he was tired of shopping and hiding from her. Either way, it was an entertaining morning. Is it sad that this is my excitement for the day? I fear I'm beginning to enjoy the mall seniors less out of amusement and more for their company. No need to answer my previous question.

Mall Diaries - Entry #1

Ok, so most of you know that we currently have a booth set up in the mall to catch those all those Christmas shoppers who might not otherwise consider tickets or gift cards for gifts. At least that was idea. Yes, we have caught some Christmas shoppers (not litterally, I don't think that would be good for business) but we've also been catching so much more...

Number one question we get is easily "Where is the shoe store?" - I'm sure I've never gone 15 minutes without being asked. In case you don't know - the shoe store is gone. It is nowhere. "Where are the washrooms?" and "Where is Heckbert Studios?" are also popular questions. There are two large signs right behind me with big arrows pointing to Heckberts. As our booth is right by the escalators I was quite amused by "How do you get to the third floor". Apparently this shopper grew up in a bungalow.

Then we've got shoppers seeking tickets that I don't have - Ann Murray at the Civic Centre, John Gracie at Trinity Church, breakfast with Santa... Yes, the newspaper does say that John Gracie tickets are available at a booth in this mall beside the big Christmas tree and yes this is a booth beside the Christmas tree and I do have tickets, but not for John Gracie. I can't explain the newspaper add, I don't know where you should go instead, all I know is that I do not have the tickets. I swear.

My favourite visitors to our mall kiosk? The seniors. 10am-2pm, Monday to Friday, is apparently a popular for seniors to visit the mall. Do they shop? Not as far as I can tell. They carry no bags and many don't even seem to actually enter stores. What do they do? They walk around, look at decorations, and they talk to people selling tickets in booths. Or sometimes they just use my chair for a few minutes as they need a rest from all of this non-shopping. I can only imagine how tiring non-shopping must be. One particularly chatty senior visits me usually every day and is very fascinated by this laptop. He says he's got to him one. He asks me if I can use it to look for jobs. I'm still not sure if it was a hypothetical question or if he actually wanted me to find him a job. To be safe, I told him no, I couldn't. The next day he was back, this time asking if you can play poker on this laptop. Again, I told him no. When not admiring the laptop he sometimes points out other shoppers who he knows. Or at least claims to know. "That's Granny over there. Yep, Granny." "Granny" is in a nearby store and gives no indication of knowing this man. He tells me Granny can get awful fiery sometimes and then he laughs and walks off.

So yes, the friends I've made are easily the highlight of my time spent in the mall. I may not know their names but I will never forget these people. Actually that's probably not true; I will likely forget them. And they will probably forget me soon too because they're old. Nevertheless they have brought joy to my days here and I like to think I did the same for them.

Admission: $5 for staff fund members and $10 for non-staff fund members and guests.

Also, we are starting to sell tickets on the travel voucher or cash prize as we have done the last few years. Ticket prices have been reduced this year - you can buy 1 ticket for $30 or 2 tickets for $50. The prize will be a $2,500 travel voucher OR $2,000 cash. An elimination draw will be held at the Christmas party. Tickets are available now.

There's a sign-up sheet in the back hallway or if you're away, let me know and I will sign you up! Deadline to sign up is December 19th.

The hardest part of my move will be not being able to see you guys anymore. I've loved this job SO much, and that is all thanks to the wonderful CCOA staff. I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

In a sense we have come to cash a check. When the architects of our party wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every snack food was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all snacks, yes, raisins as well as peanuts, and even candy coated M&M's would be guaranteed the unalienable right of partaking in delectable snack mixtures.

Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, parties have given raisins a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this party. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

There will be neither rest nor tranquility at the party until raisins are granted their snack mixture rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of the party until the bright day of justice emerges.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all snack foods have been created equal."
I have a dream that my four little children will one day be able to attend a party and eat a party mix containg not just raisins mixed with peanuts, and M&M's. But perhaps even other types of dried fruit. Maybe, just maybe, we can even dream that other types of chocolate and nuts could integrate into the mix aswell.

I have a dream where the shackles of segregation can be shed. Where all these types of snacks can co-exist inside the same bowl.

I have a dream where raisins can live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by their content, flavour and texture.

I have a dream for this upcoming Saturday - August the 11th.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back home with. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our trail mix into a beautiful symphony of flavourhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to eat together, to stand up for raisins together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My party, 'tis of thee, sweet land of raisins, of thee I sing.

And when this happens, When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every box office, every administration office and every foyer, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's snack foods, raisins, peanuts and M&M's, Dried fruits and cashews, will be able to join mixes and sing in the words of the old snacking spiritual, "Mixed at last! Mixed at last! thank God Almighty, we are mixed at last!"

...at least until she dies, which, based on our previous track record with fish, is probably not too far off.

Yes, this is very sad, but when life gives us lemon we make lemonade.

How do we turn dead fish into something good? Last year Terry came up with the ingenious idea of starting a pool for when the fish we had at the time would die. We laughed and then deeply regretted not taking this idea seriously when the fish died two weeks later. So this time, we have a pool.

If you would like to take part in the "Death Pool", please read and follow the Rules and Regulations found on the bulletin board in the box office. Minimum bets are $2.50.

This position will involve part-time to possibly full-time supervisory duties to cover shifts throughout the 2007 Festival Season as well as part-time shifts throughout the fall, winter and spring.

Wage: As per IATSE Local 906B Collective Agreement

Reports to: Box Office Manager

Position Summary:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

· Human Resources: Assist in the training, scheduling and supervision of Box Office Staff and evaluating performance

· Customer Relations: Handle customer concerns/complaints in a fair and empathetic manner

· Cash: Responsible and accountable for all Box Office revenues during shift

· Sales: Service and sell to patrons and maintain database and tracking reports

Qualifications:

· Previous Box Office Representative experience

· Excellent interpersonal, sales and communications skills

· Self-motivated and highly organized

· Excellent judgment and decision making skills

Summer 2007 - What are ya doin?

If you haven't yet informed us of your plans for the summer regarding employment, please do so by March 1. Please communicate your plans to Ashley. If you are 'uncertain', then at least tell her that and the nature of your uncertainty so we can hedge our bets and be better informed of what we need for staffing.

We will be conducting interviews for summer staff later this month.

Also, we will be running an interview process for Supervisors for the summer. Not sure when, but you will be kept informed. Accomodations will be made for those of you off-Island who are interested in an interview. We are unsure about the hours/week and it will probably be determined 'on the fly' this summer as we see what's what. The process will be open to anyone with Box Office experience.
