Congratulations!

On May 14, 2005 Deidre not only graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelors of Arts Degree, First class standing, but she was also elected by her classmates to represent them as Valedictorian. There’s a bit of her speech in Monday’s Guardian, but her words on the inclusion of all students, based on ethnicity or age, as well as her reminder to recognize our role internationally, through our interactions with students from other countries along with the opportunities to travels and the positive change that can bring about was an incredible message. She did a marvelous job and had many of us in tears (well, her mother and me anyway).
Of course, I told her I would have my camera:

Notice the trademark grin

Congratulations Deidre and the Class of 2005!

Oh, the weirdos

It's 12 oclock; we open the wickets and take the phones off night service. There is someone at the wicket waiting. He wants to pick up his Charley Pride tickets, they're under the name "Dennis". As Laura explains to him that he needs to go to the Civic Centre, I answer a phone call. A lady asks me if "someone Dennis" has come to pick up tickets yet. He's supposed to be picking up their tickets for Charley Pride but he's been gone for over an hour...

"Could I speak to Andrew Larter please?"
"Um, there's no Andrew Larter here... there is a Faye Larter?"
"Yeah, the middle initial is 'S' as in Sam, so it's probably her."
"Well this is 'Faye' with an 'F' as in Fr-"
"'F' as in Frank, right, so it's probably her."
"Um, ok, I'll transfer you through then..."

"Is this where I call for information on the Festival of the Lights?"
"No, that's Capital Commission, their number is 1-800-955-1864."
"Ok... But do you have any information about it all?"
"No."
"None at all?"
"Nope."
"Not even basic information, that's all I'm looking for?"
"No, I don't have any information at all."
"But not even just basic information?"
"No."
"Nothing then?"
"No."
"Oh... Ok."

The strangest, though, was this lady in today. The first thing she said to me was "I've written 26 songs and I can sing them all." Thankfully she didn't sing them, although she did list off the majority of them on several occasions. Apparently she came to the box office because she needed a piano so that she could perform these 26 songs(all about PEI) in a concert. She later added that she would also need someone to play this piano. Incidentally Robert Ghiz(or "Robbie" as she called him) apparently likes her speeches so she needed me to call him for her. (Which was logically the first solution that came to my mind as well... need a piano? Go to the box office, they'll call "Robbie" for you, he'll hook you up!) Eventually she stormed off in a huff when I tried to explain to her that I wasn't exactly sure how me calling Robert Ghiz would really help her...

No Life Without Wife

You must understand...putting together one of my favourite English novels in Bollywood musical form is almost too much excitement for a girl to handle!
It's BRIDE AND PREJUDICE- the movie!!!
Bollywood, for anyone unfamiliar with the style, is a film industry in India that rivals Hollywood for the number of films it produces in a year as well as the tickets sold...and the best part is they are ALL musicals. The genius behind 2003's hit' Bend it Like Beckham', Gurinder Chadha, brings together two worlds-Bollywood and Hollywood- in a film masala that pays homage to the spirit of the movies, and how that has played out in two different continents. And like any film with a Mr. Darcy, it's a love story too.
If you want to see this spectacular spectacle of bright colours and chroeographed musical numbers to rival anything on Broadway, we'll be going to see it at
City Cinema on Wendnesday, May 4th, at 9:05pm.
